New bike trails coming to Cwmcarn Forest

Feb 5, 2020

Work is underway to develop new and improved bike trails at Cwmcarn Forest.

The improvements will see existing cycle and mountain bike trails extended and enhanced; with a further 5.5km of cross country track trail, creating an attractive loop allowing riders to enjoy more of the picturesque scenery and extend their riding time before descending back into the valley.

A new ‘blue’ cycle trail is also being added for families to enjoy the spectacular surroundings at Cwmcarn Forest; this is expected to be completed by late spring 2020.

The tourist attraction, set within 1400 hectares of stunning wooded landscape in the Caerphilly county borough, has seen a number of new additions recently, including an adventure play hub and six luxury lodges.
Funding for the new ‘blue’ cycle trail has been provided from Caerphilly County Borough Council and through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

Improvements to the existing trails at Cwmcarn Forest form part of a Visit Wales led Tourism Attractor Destination programme which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. The trail works are being undertaken as part of a major £4.6M EU backed project, the Mon and Brecon Canal Adventure Triangle, which is being delivered by Caerphilly County Borough Council in partnership with Torfaen County Borough Council, the Canal & River Trust and Welsh Government. Under this scheme Caerphilly county borough will benefit from over £1.8m capital investment.

Future projects in the Caerphilly county borough will include enhancements at Cwmcarn Forest, such as landscape improvements to the lakeside and walking trails, including those linking Twbarlwm to West Torfaen, and infrastructure works to the nearby Crumlin arm of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal.

Cllr Lisa Phipps, the council’s Cabinet Member for Homes, Places and Tourism, said “Cwmcarn Forest is already a flagship destination in the county borough. The latest improvements will offer even more opportunities for those seeking outdoor adventures; from local residents to tourists visiting the county borough.”
