Explore Cwmcarn Forest by bike or foot

The hills of this previously mined area have been transformed into peaceful forests with impressive views where nature has reclaimed the majority of the former industrial past. Today Cwmcarn Forest has become a haven for people and wildlife.

Cwmcarn Forest is mountain biking paradise with three mountain bike trails and another coming soon. With ample parking, bike repair shop and lift service, everything is on hand for a day of biking for thrill seeking adrenaline junkies. Extend your visit by staying at one of the glamping pods or newly added lodges on site. Breakfast is available along with snacks and hearty meals at Cwmcarn’s Raven’s Cafe, located in the visitor centre.

Whether you want walking trails or a leisurely stroll, Cwmcarn Forest has it all, from challenging hill climbs up Twmbarlwm to gentle walks around the forest and valley floor. Take a look at our trails below.

Mountain Biking at Cwmcarn Forest

Three outstanding mountain bike trails offer some serious bike action at Cwmcarn. With two red graded ‘difficult’ trails and one ‘extreme’ trail, they are not for the faint hearted. Trails are free to ride and open all year.

Walking at Cwmcarn Forest

Cwmcarn Forest has some of the best walking trails in Wales. Choose from the gentle Nantcarn Walk along Cwmcarn lake or the more strenuous 9 mile 1807 walk taking in historic features, stunning woodlands and fantastic views.

Please note that a number of our longer walks have diversions put in place due to the tree felling taking place on site, please check with the visitor centre before setting off or follow the diversion markers on the trails.

Cwmcarn Forest Adventure Playground

2019 saw the launch of a fantastic new adventure playground. Located just by the lake, the playground is suitable for children age 7+

Cwmcarn Forest has much to offer for a relaxing outdoor adventurous day out, if you want to take your adventure up a notch, Caerphilly Adventures offer many more outdoor activities for groups and individuals on and off site.

Great Adventure Days take place during school holidays for ages 7 – 12.
